How to Calculate Reading Time for an Article or Speech

The words-per-minute numbers that actually hold up, how to estimate reading and speaking time, and how to show a “5 min read” label honestly.

By M2Toolkit Editorial TeamPublished 5 min read

Quick answer

Reading time (minutes) = word count ÷ 238

238 words per minute is the average silent reading speed for adults reading non-fiction. For speaking — speeches, presentations, voice-overs — use about 130–150 words per minute. A 1,500-word article takes about 6 minutes to read and 10–11 minutes to say out loud.

“5 min read” labels help readers decide whether to start now or save an article for later. Speech timing matters even more: running over your slot is the fastest way to lose an audience. Both come down to word count and a realistic pace.

Realistic speeds

ActivityWords per minute
Silent reading, non-fiction (average adult)≈ 238
Silent reading, fiction≈ 260
Skimming≈ 450+
Conversational speech≈ 150–160
Presentations and speeches≈ 130–150
Audiobooks and narration≈ 150–160

When to adjust the numbers

  • Technical or dense content (code, legal text, research) is read more slowly — 150–200 wpm is more realistic.
  • Images, charts and code blocks take time to absorb. Many sites add around 10–12 seconds per image.
  • For speeches, add time for pauses, applause and slides. Rehearse once with a timer — the best calibration there is.
  • Hard-to-read text slows everyone down. Check it with the Readability Checker.

Getting an accurate word count

Word processors count slightly differently (for example, whether “e-mail” is one word), but differences are usually under 1% — irrelevant for timing.
