How to use the Average Calculator
- Paste or type your numbers. Commas, spaces and new lines all work.
- Read the average (mean) and the other statistics.
- Open “How it was calculated” to see the working.
What does this tool do?
“Average” usually means the mean: add everything up and divide by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted, and the mode is the value that appears most often.
The median is often a better “typical” value when a few numbers are extreme. House prices and salaries are usually reported as medians for that reason.
Why use it?
- Paste a column straight from a spreadsheet.
- Get all common averages in one go.
- Shows when there is no mode.
Example: test scores
Scores of 12, 15, 15, 18, 21 and 30 add up to 111. Divide by 6 and the mean is 18.5. Sorted, the middle two values are 15 and 18, so the median is 16.5. The mode is 15, the only repeated score. The range is 30 − 12 = 18.

Frequently asked questions
Which average should I use?
Use the mean for evenly spread data, the median when there are outliers (like one very high salary), and the mode for the most common category or value.
