How to use the Strain Calculator
- Choose length change or stress and modulus.
- Pick what to solve for.
- Enter the values in consistent units.
What does this tool do?
Engineering strain is the change in length divided by the original length. It has no units, so it's often written as a percentage or in microstrain (µε, millionths).
Within the elastic range, Hooke's law links strain to stress through Young's modulus: ε = σ ÷ E.
Why use it?
- Two strain formulas.
- Percent and microstrain.
- Solve for any variable.
The formula
ε = ΔL ÷ L₀
ε = σ ÷ E
