How to use the Work Calculator
- Choose W = F × d or W = P × t.
- Pick what to solve for.
- Enter the values and read the work in joules.
What does this tool do?
In physics, work is done when a force moves something along its direction: pushing a box with 50 N for 12 m does 600 J of work. Holding a heavy bag still does no work in this sense.
Work is also power multiplied by time: a 100 W motor running for a minute does 6,000 J.
Why use it?
- Two work formulas.
- Solve for any variable.
- Joules, the SI unit.
The formula
W = F × d
W = P × t
Accuracy and limits
- W = F × d assumes the force acts along the direction of motion. At an angle θ, use F cos θ as the force.
- Values are in SI units (shown next to each field). Convert other units first, or use our unit converters.
